From Cancun Airport to Mahahual is a 4 to 5 hour dirve. Road construction started in 2006 and is far from finished, so it might be even more than a 5 hour drive. We absolutely advise against driving in the dark. If your plane arrives later than 12 o’clock in Cancun, consider spending the first night in Playa del Carmen or Tulum. (In winter time it gets already dark at 5 pm)
Directions
From Cancun airport drive south, direction of Chetumal on highway 307. You will pass through the towns of Playa del Carmen, Tulum and Felipe Carrillo Puerto.
After 290 kilometers, you pass through Limones, a small village. Continue a few kilometers, until you see the road signs indicating to turn left to go to Mahahual.
Continue for a half hour drive on a very good road through the mangrove swamps.
After 50 kilometers you pass the soldiers. Just continue 5 more kilometers. Note: DONT turn to the left at the soldiers, that’s the road to Xcalak. !
Arriving at the Caribbean sea, turn to the right (you have no other option ) to get to the little fisherman’s town of Mahahual.
